We absolutely love the rock biography. It blurs the boundaries of the creative insanity of fiction while being firmly rooted in reality...and how can you not like that. When picking one up, we always flip to that little spread of photos that appears in the middle, after all, we are primarily visual creatures. That is why we love David Bowie Black Book, a visual biography of the artist's career. If there ever was a performer that was begging for a visual compendium of their career, it is Bowie. The guy has metamorphosed more times than Madonna, and has managed to stay incredibly relevant, both musically and fashionably, and will continue to do so until the end of days. We have seen the future of mens business casual footwear, and it is the LunarGrand Wingtip. Marrying the classic silhouette of the wingtip, with a Nike Lunarlon sole, in a crazy contrasting colour, it's modern springy comfort on your grand dad's shoes. The suede ones dropped a couple of weeks ago and we've been lusting after the blue ones ever since (pics after the jump), but this weekend Cole Haan is dropping the leather version, and now we're doing the math for how much two pairs will cost. And for the ladies...well...there's no Lunarlon for the ladies. But Cole Haan has plenty of great shoes for women too.

We have often wonder how much fruit and veg, and in turn, money we waste annually because of rot. It seems as though we are continually forgetting and then later finding in the back recesses of our refrigerator the long forgotten objects of nutrition. As it turns out, our ancestors had it figured out, and Korean artist Jihyun Ryou has decided to explore history's lineage for keeping food fresh for her latest project. At first, after just seeing the pictures, we didn't understand, but after seeing the video (posted for convenience after the jump) we think that this idea has legs. It also doesn't hurt that it looks as good as it does. You really have to see it, and have it explained, to fully appreciate this, so please take the time to watch the vid. You'll be glad you did.

Call us optimistic but we are ready for better weather to hit our region and while that may be hard to imagine given that snow is still swirling around us, it will come and when it does we want to be prepared. This is the one that got away. After recently spending the better part of an afternoon in an LA AllSaints debating with friends which pieces to splurge on, we left without this jacket and have been kicking ourselves ever since. Now we have friends who could literally live in this store and don't get us wrong, we love the whole package; the deconstructed fashion, the antiqued rock and roll store design, the gorgeous sales staff but we really, really loved the monument jacket. Lindsey Pavao - Say Ahh (The Voice)

So you're about to learn one of our dirty little secrets. Our guilty pleasure on Monday night is The Voice; the NBC show that does away with the visual judgement of other rising star programs, as the judges have to choose contestants based on their voice alone, essentially blind as their backs are turned while the person performs. We saw Lindsay's performance several weeks ago, and have not been able to get her out of our head. Her performance of Trey Songz's tune "Say Ahh" is nothing short of remarkable. We had to listen to the original to be sure, but Ms. Pavao's version bares little resemblance, having come up with an arrangement that is singularly hers. At times her voice is sweet, almost innocent, and at others, her large Bambi eyes betray a darker side, with her voice turning to a declarative growl. We urge you to listen...and then listen again. We think Lindsey Pavao has a very bright musical future despite what happens on the television show, and we're so looking forward to hearing her claim other's material as her own.

We learned the other day that in much of the English speaking world, Schrove Tuesday, also know as Pancake Tuesday, Pancake Day, Fat Tuesday, Mardi Gras, and in 2012, February 21st, it is customary to eat, you guessed it, pancakes. Obviously we're a week late, but there is no reason why you can't have a belated Pancake Day. These are the offspring of the collab between the sneaker genius Tinker Hatfield, Hiroshi Fujiwara, and Nike CEO Mark Parker. It took seemingly three of them to decide the next major innovation in the shoe game would be knitting. This is different from the "air" and "shox" technology that was, for lack of a better term, a gimmick. This however, may really be the performance boosting tech that will set Nike apart from the rest for some time to come. First and foremost is the fit, far snugger and comfortable than the average shoe, giving the competitive types a superior feel for their feet in whatever sport they're playing. Next, and maybe the most important, is the weight. The running variety of the HTM Flyknit comes in at a very sparse 7.7 ounces. Alphabet Topography by Synoptic Office

Reminding us of Joy Division's debut album cover art "Unknown Pleasures", the designers from Synoptic Office have created the alphabet as a topographical and 3-D illustration of the frequency of sound each letter creates. Or as they put it far more eloquently "The physical form of language is a record of collective memory. In this monotype typeface, the height of the letterforms is determined by how often a letter is used. This typeface maps the rhythmic ebb and flow of English. Each letter sits in a 6 x 6 inch square, allowing for any combination of letters to run seamlessly both vertically and horizontally." We were so struck by the beauty of this creation and the genius behind it we had to pass it on.

Panamerica Folding Chair - Industry of All Nations

In many of the of countries of central and south America, there is a version of this folding chair. In El Salvador you can find one constructed of tree branches. In Belize they make a large and bulky version made from hard wood, and in Argentina it is not uncommon seeing a gaucho relaxing on one enjoying their mate. It only makes sense then that a company named Industry of All Nations would borrow bits and pieces from all the different versions and construct of modernized teak version representative of them all. We love it, and despite the implication that because it's a folding chair it is a chair the sits out of the way until you need extra seating, we think that it could definitely hold its own in the right room. The Pibal City Streamer by Philippe Starck

The über hip Philippe Starck has designed what is being hailed a the bike of the future. The city of Bourdeaux, France, which apparently is one of the most cycling friendly places on the planet, was looking to replace the aging cycles in their bike share fleet...and when Phillipe Starck gets involved it's really no contest. The bike is a hybrid bicycle/scooter configuration, which means it'll move under both motorized power as well as people power. Of course, it has on offer style in spades as an accoutrement to the obvious functionality. It's being made in collaboration with French automotive make Peugeot, and will be pressed into service soon. Side bar....the city of Bourdeaux has put in place a number of initiatives, like limited traffic in the urban centre, a new tramway system, and obviously bike lanes. The bike share program means that people don't have to go out and purchase and store their own bike, rather very affordably renting a bike when they need it, and dropping it off at one of the many rental locations around the city. Consequently, cycling trips by the populace have increased significantly...and that is not to mention the health bonus of powering your own errands. Sounds like a good model for all cities.

Bones Brigade: An Autobiography Teaser

These were the first idols we had. The legendary Bones Brigade. Tony Hawk, Lance Mountain, Mike McGill, Steve Caballero, Tommy Guerrero, and Rodney Mullen. These were icons of the 80's skate scene, and to this day we get giddy when we reminisce. We can draw all their pro model decks from memory, we can recite dialogue, despite it being corny and poorly acted, from the eponymous "The Search for Animal Chin," which ended up being the prototype for the skate film. Therefore, you'll have to understand that we are extremely excited that the patriarch and creator of the Brigade, Stacy Peralta, who also happens to be the documentary film maker that brought us the excellent surf/skate doc "Dog Town and Z-Boys," has finally made a documentary film covering the decade that the Bones Brigade were together. Above, we've posted a short clip, a teaser if you will, from the film covering skateboarding's golden age. We are unable to report a theatrical or DVD release date as of yet, as info on the project is pretty limited. We can say this; it premiered in Santa Barbara a couple of weeks ago, and we imagine you'll be able to plunk yourself in a theatre or couch very shortly for a look. For now, watch the teaser above, and/or hit the jump and see the video from the premiere from TransWorld Skateboarding Magazine. Also, of note, and for fred purposes, the film was chosen as an Official Selection for the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

This is the fourth and final installment of Kirby Fergusen's terrific online documentary series. We posted Part 3 here, but missed out on posting part 1 and 2. They are however available on Youtube here and here. But we're dealing with part 4. The final episode deals with patent and copyright law...or rather, how it bastardized the original intent of the laws, which sought an incentive for creativity, thereby creating a large and fruitful public domain. This of course was all done for the "common good," a term that has no business in modern copyright and patent laws. If you're wondering, it has been replaced by "intellectual property" and "exclusive rights." Watch it...you'll see what we're talking about. It's big business systematically destroying creativity.

We didn't really know that the folding chair needed improving...but that was before we saw this re-interpretation by Jake Phipps. Apart from the obvious of it looking amazing and modern, the redesign has it being the thinnest folding chair in the world...collapsing to an astoundingly minimal 3 cm. It is manufactured by Gerbruder Thonet-Vienna, but you can contact Jake directly at his London studio here if you're interested in purchasing, and while you're there have a look at some of his other fantastic creations.

Alexander Wang Bike Lock

Cycling has really taken on a life of its own...with the whole fixie thing and bike lanes slowly replacing side walks all over the world. It was just a matter of time before the fashion world turned its trend spoiling gaze upon it and are pumping out their own interpretations (let's just hope they don't ruin it like they did with flannel shirts, ripped jeans and waffle long underwear in the 90's). Alexander Wang released a more...shall we say...upscale version of the classic chain bike lock. Essentially, it's a blackened chain with a faux alligator cover on a brass lock. Very classy indeed. If cycling isn't your thing however...you could always use it to class up you next rumble. Seriously though, all judgemental and barely funny quips aside...it is a beautiful piece of kit.

Coco Mat Surf Board

We always had a hard time reconciling the save the planet culture of surfing with the one tool they use; the surf board. The most popular materials for a surfboard starting at the inside out is expanded polystyrene foam, fiberglass cloth, and epoxy resin. To be sure, these three items, especially the core of EPS foam, are some of the least environmentally friendly products on the planet. Fortunately...it's that keep the ocean clean ethos that's the driving force behind the above innovation. The tech employs coconut husk fibres, a previously throw away material, which reduces both board weight and the amount of harmful chemicals used in the production. While not being entirely green, it's a step in the right direction. On average, the boards are 3 - 4 pounds lighter, making them very fast as well, and despite this weight saving their strength to weight ratio makes them some of the strongest boards available. Beach House by Marcio Kogan Architects

As it turns out, we've determined that Marcio Kogan is currently our favourite residential architect. It was a happy accident that we discovered the coincidence of several of the homes we covet most in the world having all been designed by Mr. Kogan. I guess we have a type. The above home, the Beach House nestled between Sau Paulo and Rio De Janiero, is for us, the piece de resistance. The pics really speak for themselves, and there are plenty after the jump.

Petalo Bed

The Petalo Bed caught our attention we think because it reminds us of a bed set-up that our grandparents must have had and it was sort of quaint. We looked into this design a little further and were pretty impressed by the double headboard that separates into two single headboards. We think it would be a perfect solution for children or the guest bedroom and who can deny the appeal of the simplistic styling of generations past? More photos after the break.

Employing a small studio in Tibet using the best highland wool from that region, Kath turns the traditional hand knotted rugs on their heads. The Ramos Alarm Clock

Our search for a better alarm clock continues...and we've come across the Ramos Alarm Clock via Kickstarter. We love the nixie tube numbers on this one, but it is the "defusing" feature that we like the most. There is no snooze feature on this bad boy, but rather a panel for defusing the alarm mounted elsewhere in the room that requires you to get up and enter a code sequence to shut the alarm down. The premise is that you're now out of bed and had to think a little bit, so the likelihood of your going back to bed is diminished. A good feature for those chronic snooze slapping over sleepers. The nixie tube version is a little pricey, but the Soviet era nixie tubes themselves are no longer made, and the stock dwindles annually. The announcement of this car makes us very, very angry at North Americans. It's a Eurozone only offer...meaning we'll never have one. Why can't the colonies embrace the wagon? The SUV is ubiquitous, and although we can see some purpose to the SUV in very specific cases, their proliferation is really beyond us when one can opt for a wagon. Case in point...SUV's do not handle well, they are not good on gas, yet offer lots of room which obviously appeals to the family. That being said, a wagon can be good on gas, can handle extremely well, and offer lots of room. You see the disconnect right? There is a superior option available, yet North Americans are hell bent on unnecessarily big vehicles. Maybe it's because the North American manufacturers have never offered an inspired wagon? Remember the wood panelled Vista Cruisers of the 70's? All the European marks have wagons...really, really nice wagons. Even the base level Audi A4 Avant is a beauty...but it is the Audi RS4 version that really gets the blood pumping. It's an all wheel drive, 450 horsepowered monster that rockets from naught to 60 in 4.5 seconds...making the morning rip to the day care with the kids more of a joyride than a chore. Although...this particular model does shoot to hell our point regarding gas mileage, as dropping the hammer will make the gas needle visibly move, but we'd rather get crummy gas mileage scaring the s@#$ out of passengers with speed then with weight. Now that fashion has cycled back round and everything old is new again, they are revitalizing their brand and creating new sets and colours above and beyond the kitchen. The superstitious among us partake in a number of strange customs including the very common "knock on wood" ritual that has us searching for a piece of wood wherever we are in order to ward off bad luck. Problem is what happens if you can't find any wood, particle board or even sawdust in your vicinity? Pat Kim is a designer from Brooklyn who has solved one of your irrational beliefs arising from ignorance or fear (don't get mad at us pal, it's in the dictionary) by creating a ring out of wood with a tiny knocker on it. We had the pleasure of spotting this pen in the "Property Of" store in Amsterdam, and have had remorse ever since for having not got ourselves one. Inspired by the vintage bullet pens, the Midori comes in two parts, one fitting inside the other. The clever design has the pen being half size when not being used, making it ideal for travel. We just love the brass, and the engraving on the outside...very classic indeed, and would be well suited for an everyday carry. You can learn and see more, as well as get yours, here. Paella is our go to dish. We make it for friends, to celebrate, and for comfort. The recipe we use is a carefully backwards engineered version from various Paella's we've sampled over the years, and for our purposes we think that we've pretty much nailed it. However, we could always try a new recipe, or a perhaps a lesser known regional variety, and thankfully Phaidon has published a beautiful Paella cookbook that will allow to accomplish just that. We think 108 recipes should be enough...enough for us to try a new recipe every other night and blog about over the course of a year and then write and sell the screen play...unless something like that has been done already. It debuted this year at Sundance, and will be seeing limited release almost immediately. Triumph Speed Twin Concept

So...a couple of guys looking to graduate from design school decided that doing a modern take on an iconic motorcycle was a good idea. Had we been friends with these blokes, we'd have cautioned them against it, as the Triumph Speed Twin is perfect the way it is and an update a la the new Camaro would just be unnecessary. However, we would have been bad friends in doing so, and would have robbed the world of this absolutely beautiful piece of mobile sculpture. If Triumph were to run with this concept, and we highly recommend that they hire these guys and do just that, they would more than likely have these spoken for for their entire production run. Maintaining the lines of a classic café racer, which incidentally are so hot right now, with all the modern features of a contemporary model, this design could easily slot into the Triumph line-up right next to the classic Bonneville. Our favourite little detail is the quilted fabric from British coat manufacturer Barbour being used on the seat.

Pentax thought that letting renowned industrial designer Marc Newson design their latest camera offering would be a good idea...and well....yes. Yes it was. Beside the obvious cred Pentax will garner having Mr. Newson attached to the design, they will also move a lot more product because....well....look at it. It makes us all warm and squishy inside when companies out source their design as it shows they understand that a product that functions and looks slick is better than a product that simply functions. Design aside, the camera comes with some seriously yummy photo nerd goodies as well, such as a 16.1 megapixel APS-C sized CMOS image sensor with low noise image capture and and multiple aspect ratios, high res 3" rear LCD screen, an ISO range of 100-25600, and full 1080p (at 30fps) video capture. In addition to that, the camera is fully compatible with almost the entire quiver of lenses Pentax has on offer, including the new super thin 40mm pancake lens. Mmmmmmmm.....pancakes!

Offerman Woodshop

They say art imitates life...but this is a really literal interpretation of that cliché. We were introduced to Nick Offerman (not personally but figuratively) through his portrayal of the patriarchal character Ron Swanson on the hilarious show "Parks and Rec." The character initially took a back seat to several of the other main characters, however over the subsequent seasons the Ron Swanson character has become one of, if not the, most popular character in the show with a very loyal following of, we're assuming, fatherless twenty-somethings. We're not gonna lie, we love the guy, especially his photo album of the steaks he has eaten. He is the prototype of the mans man, and suffers no fluff or extraneous adornments to his time or life. That's why we were so happy to see that Nick Offerman doesn't stray far from the character he portrays, operating a wood shop specializing in the time honoured joinery construction of furniture, constructing beds, dressers, benches and even boats. The furniture oozes quality that is just not found in the mass produced imported variety, and will definitely be something that can be passed on generation after generation. Nick sources all the slabs of wood himself, carefully choosing super fine pieces of wood, and only from fallen trees or salvage trunk and all from the fine state of California, preventing this fine timber from becoming fire wood. Nick employs several wood working maestro's who in addition to Nick himself, can aid you in designing and building for you a custom piece of furniture, or to quote their website, "a table for the eating of beefsteaks." Old Farmer's Almanac 2012

So...we're pretty sure that you know that the Farmer's Almanac exists...but we're equally certain that you've never read one, other than gloss over the cover at the grocery store check out. Turns out...it is a super useful, interesting and fun read and as pertinent as ever in these modern times. The Farmer's Almanac has been published annually since 1818 from its headquarters in Lewiston, Maine and has become revered for its weather predictions. Funny story about that...their long term predictions for the weather have an 80 - 85% accuracy, beating out your local talking head on the TV who has Doppler radar at his fingertips. If the casino had those odds...we'd all be gambling addicts. The almanac uses a super-duper secret mathematical and astrological formula that relies on sunspot activity, tidal action, planetary positions and more to create the forecast....sometimes up to two years in advance. We say super-duper secret because next to the formula for Coke and the KFC recipe, it is the most secret "recipe" held in private sector hands. The weather portion aside, the book is also famous for its corny humour, gardening tips, recipes, trivia, fishing advice and human interest stories. Conservation, sustainable living, and and simplicity are the publications core values and are heavily promoted throughout. Sounds to us that this is the perfect edition to your fast paced, plugged in life. We could all use more simplicity, sustainable living and conservation in our lives. Let's decide today...all of us...that we are going to look and act like adults when we prepare and enjoy our lunches. The folks at Hodinkee were lucky enough to get the heads up at what Hamilton Watches has in store the Basel 2012 watch show. They picked this one as their favourite, and we'd have to agree. Possessing beautifully crafted simplicity that harkens back to the timepieces of the 50's, we think that this watch is fantastic for both genders, and can be dressed up or dressed down. It is not exactly what we'd call cheap, but it is priced under $1000, which for a brand name timepiece with swiss movement inside, is way beyond fair.

XI Bookshelf by Goncalo Campos

Another week and another book shelf...but this is not your average bookshelf. For one, this side steps the usual fibreboard rectangle for a solid wood roman numeral. Second, it uses no hardware or fasteners to keep it together, rather opting for an ingenious series of precisely placed cut outs that allow the shelf to lock together, more in kind with a puzzle than a piece of furniture. Third, and probably the most clever aspect of the shelf, is that the instructions are actually milled into the individual pieces making putting it together easy (pics after the jump). We have conquered fire. Evidence to that fact above in the form of the Big Flame by Italian fireplace designer Acquaefuoco. The one above is the larger version of two, the smaller being able to be wall mounted (pics after the jump). Because these are bioethanol fuelled fireplaces, there is no gas plumbing required which makes them moveable from room to room. Peugeot Nicaragua Coffee Mill

This is definitely a necessity for the coffee purist. Sure....the modern burr grinder is fine, but there is something satisfying about a more manual experience. We just happen to have one very similar, and love every cup it aids us in making...but we doubt very much ours is a smooth as the Peugeot version above. Coming in this lush matte black solid wood finish, the mill is far more adjustable than its electric competitors; manually adjusting from fine to course in order to suit every taste and preparation method....and like all Peugeot mills and grinders, the mechanisms carry a lifetime warranty. A couple of days ago we posted the new video for Justice's single "On'n'on." Turns out, it was particularly timely, as they are about to drop a remix EP next week. The five track EP features the talent of Tiga, Erol Alkan, Brodinski, Video Village and the mega producer Rick Rubin. You know you've arrived when Rubin remixes one of your tracks. We've included Rick's version above, which we might add, is funky as hell.

Being released as part of Penguins "Graphics Deluxe" series, which pairs the classic re-edition with an artist who essentially has free reign to design the cover. The book itself is a translation of the original text, and features no pictures on the inside, but the cover makes sure the book is unmistakable...which has managed to be informative without being gratuitous or pornographic. JMC Soundboard

We present this more for interests sake, as this particular item may prove to be too much money for the average audio listener...considering it's $6500 price tag. However, if you are a true audiophile, and want to experience something different from the traditional loudspeaker, then this might be right up your alley. The Soundboard is built, not by an audio or electrical engineer, but by a guitar maker, using time honoured Lutherie techniques. This is because the soundboard is designed to project resonance in the same way a guitar or lute does. Each Soundboard uses 350 year old spruce specially sourced from the Swiss Risoud Forest, which is both more cost effective, and environmentally friendly. The spruce, carved paper thin, provides excellent response to vibrations, and offering the listener a concert like experience. The design of the surface disperses sound evenly throughout the room, something that is usually done by multiple speakers, and creates on omni-directional wave which creates a "pervasive musical climate" where the resonance and volume remain balanced no matter how near or far you are away from the speaker. For our purposes, this speaker system bridges the gap between the room dominating monoliths needed for precise sound reproduction, and a piece of art hung on the wall. You can learn more here.

Portraits of the Homeless by Lee Jeffries

Lee Jeffries once spent his talent snapping images of footballers and other elite athletes working at their crafts. After an encounter with a young homeless girl on the London street, and we're assuming the guilt he felt over shooting her photo clandestinely, he has now both changed the subject matter he chooses to shoot, and the way in which he gets the shot. Rather than sneakily skulking off with the photos of the girl curled up in a sleeping bag, he opted to do the right thing and speak with the girl, getting her permission to use the photos and befriending her at the same time. He now makes a point of getting to know every person he photographs, and his perceptions of the people that live with homelessness everyday have forever been changed. The Cuboluce Bedside Lamp

You may have never seen this before, but believe it or not, this is a design icon. So much so, that it is part of the permanent exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. The lamp relies on a reflecting surfacee on the underside of the lid, which also acts as the switch. Close it and the light goes off. Open it, and it come on. Ingenious for fumbling in the dark. Because of the ability to direct the amount and direction of light, in terms of a reading light, it is hard to rival. If you are interested in getting one (and they are quite reasonably priced for a design classic) just google the name. There are plenty of retailers online carrying many colour varieties.
